Kindergarten Annual Thanksgiving Feast!

Today was our annual Kindergarten Feast! We spent the day creating costumes to wear and food to eat. One of our Social Studies standards is learning about the Thanksgiving holiday. We made Native American vests, headbands, necklaces, and we made Pilgrim hats. Students could choose to be a Native American or Pilgrim. (The vast majority chose to be Native Americans.)  Students made turkey sandwiches, trail mix, pumpkin pie, and haystacks to eat! We rolled butcher paper down the middle of our hallway and "got our eat on"!! It is always so much fun and what a great way to sum up our Thanksgiving lessons!

What goes up, must come down!

This week we learned about gravity. The first day we tried to throw popcorn to each other from several paces away. We found out we had to get closer together to get it to our partner. We discovered gravity was pulling the popcorn down.

We read 2 different books about gravity.

We also watched The Magic School Bus: Gains Weight! In this episode Phoebe is trying to slam dunk a basketball but gravity is affecting her! Mrs. Frizzle conducts a lesson on gravity.

We made predictions about whether or not we thought objects, when dropped from the same height, would hit the ground at the same time. We discussed whether size and weight made a difference. Then we experimented and tested our predictions using balls.

We found out that objects when dropped from the same height will hit the ground at the same time if nothing is affecting them (ie: air).

Our last experiment testing gravity was with paper airplanes. We folded airplanes to see how gravity would affect them when we flew them. We talked about how real airplanes have engines that keep them in the air and work against gravity.

Halloween Fun!

We have been working on stretching out words in writing. We labeled a monster as a class and then labeled a different one independently.

We continued working with rhyming words this week! We read the book "My Monster Mama Loves Me So." It is seriously one of the cutest books! One of our PreK teachers shared it with me!

While reading it, we listened for rhyming words and  created an anchor chart of MoNsTeR RhYmEs!!

Students also drew their own monsters and wrote a story describing their monster.

We began our pumpkin investigation on Monday!

We had to help get the pulp and seeds from the pumpkin to carve it! We later counted the seeds and found out it had 462!!

As part of our pumpkin investigation we voted on how to carve it!

On Wednesday we read "The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything."

We sequenced the story and helped read the story.

During one of our Daily 5 rounds we could choose to sequence the story by ourself!

We read "Clifford's Halloween"
and wrote about what we would be for Halloween!
